Of Tweets and Hamsters

 

I tweet a lot. It’s no secret, Twitter is my preferred social media. I honestly can’t tell you why it works for me but it does.  I started tweeting back when I was deployed to Iraq in 2009. Hard to believe I’ve been on there for over 3 years now.

 

Authors and publishers always seem to be chasing the tail of the dragon on social media: looking for the one thing that will bring them mega huge sales numbers and push them out of the masses and into bestseller status. But the secret to social media for authors is really much simpler than that: do what you enjoy.

 

If pinterest is your thing, then do it. If you prefer to post on Facebook, then do that. If Twitter drives you absolutely crazy, then don’t do it. There are some folks who love it and others who hate it.

 

But don’t tweet because your publisher says so, do it because you enjoy it. If the idea of interaction makes you break out hives, then don’t. Any good promo should be based on something you enjoy.

 

Take Fluffy. I started tweeting about Fluffy last year when she first moved in over Christmas break. Fluffy was the pre-k class pet hamster and I was terrified that she was going to escape and thus scar and entire class of 4 year olds. Well, it turned out that Fluffy was really popular, especially when she escaped. And since Fluffy has moved in, people continually ask about Fluffy.

 

I didn’t do it to sell books. As far as I know, Fluffy hasn’t sold a single book for me. But she’s fun to tweet about, she’s fun to write a facebook post about. I enjoy it. And so I keep doing it. You’d be surprised how many people ask me about that crazy hamster (she really is funny).

Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats, three dogs and two escape-artists hamsters, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She has commanded two companies, served in Germany, Korea, Fort Hood and Iraq, and been lucky not to get fired. She is a terrible cook and an even worse housekeeper, but she’s a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.
